How to Raise Your SAT Math Score by 100 Points

A practical SAT Math plan for finding repeat mistakes, improving timing, and building toward a 100-point gain.

A 100-point SAT Math increase rarely comes from doing hundreds of random questions. It usually comes from finding the 10 to 20 points you give away in the same ways: a rushed negative sign, an equation set up from the wrong quantity, a graph you read too quickly, or a question that quietly eats five minutes.

That does not make a 100-point jump automatic. Your starting score, timeline, and current gaps matter. But if you stop treating every wrong answer as the same kind of problem, you can make your practice much more productive.

Start With A Baseline You Can Trust

Take one full, timed official-style practice test before you build a plan. A few untimed questions can show what you know; they cannot show how you perform when you must choose a method, use the digital tools, and manage the clock.

Afterward, save every missed Math question and every question where you guessed, ran out of time, or got the answer only after changing your approach. Your total score is a starting point, but the pattern underneath it matters more.

For each question, label the main reason it went wrong:

  • Concept gap: You did not know the algebra, geometry, data, or advanced-math idea needed.
  • Setup error: You knew the math but translated the words, graph, table, or expression incorrectly.

Turn Missed Questions Into An Error Log

An error log is the fastest way to turn practice into a plan. It can live in a notebook, a spreadsheet, or a document. Keep it simple enough that you will actually update it.

For every missed or uncertain question, write:

  1. Skill: For example, linear equations, nonlinear functions, percentages, probability, or interpreting a graph.
  2. Why it went wrong: Be specific: “I solved for x but the question asked for x + 2,” not “I rushed.”
  3. Better move: The action you will take next time, such as circling the requested value or writing the equation before opening the calculator.
  4. Redo date: Review the question two or three days later without looking at your old work.

Here is what a useful entry looks like:

  • Skill: Systems of equations
  • Why it went wrong: I substituted before checking whether elimination would be faster.
  • Better move: Compare coefficients first; use elimination when one variable can cancel quickly.
  • Redo date: Thursday

After a few sessions, count the categories. If seven of your last 12 misses came from modeling word problems, that is where your next study block belongs. Do not spend that block reviewing a topic you already get right because it feels easier.

Use A 60-30-10 Practice Split

Once your error log has a pattern, divide a typical Math study session into three parts:

  • 60% targeted practice: Work on your two biggest error categories. Review one example, then solve a short set of similar questions.
  • 30% mixed timed practice: Combine several skills so you have to identify the method yourself. Set a timer and practice moving on when a question stalls you.
  • 10% review and reset: Update the error log, redo one old miss, and write the single habit you will use next session.

For a 50-minute session, that could mean 30 minutes on equations and problem solving, 15 minutes on a mixed timed set, and 5 minutes on review. The exact schedule can change, but the order matters: learn the fix, test the fix under pressure, then record what happened.

Fix Timing Without Racing Every Question

When students want a higher Math score, “go faster” is tempting advice. It is also too vague to help. Better timing comes from choosing when to persist and when to move.

Try this three-step decision on hard questions:

  1. Give yourself a short setup window. Can you identify the math relationship and a first move?
  2. Choose a route. Solve algebraically, use a graph or table, use the calculator strategically, or estimate from the answer choices.
  3. Mark and move if the route is not working. Do not let one stubborn question take the time meant for several solvable ones.

During review, identify the questions where you lost time, not only the ones you missed. A correct answer found after a long struggle may still be a timing problem. Redo it and ask: Was there a shorter setup? Could a graph have revealed the intersection? Did the answer choices offer a useful check?

The goal is not to use a calculator on everything. It is to know when it saves time and when a quick algebra move is cleaner. Practice both options on a few questions so the choice becomes familiar before test day.

Build A Four-Week Improvement Cycle

If you have about a month, use this cycle. Adjust the number of questions to fit your schoolwork and activities, but keep the review rhythm.

Week 1: Diagnose And Repair

Take a baseline test or a substantial timed Math set. Build your error log, choose your top two categories, and review the underlying concepts. End the week by redoing every miss without notes.

Week 2: Practice The Repeated Moves

Do short targeted sets on your biggest categories. Add mixed timed questions so you practice recognizing the skill, not just repeating one question type. Keep tracking setup errors and timing separately.

Week 3: Add Pressure

Complete a longer timed Math practice session. Use your skip-and-return plan, then spend at least as much time reviewing as you spent taking the set. Compare your new misses with Week 1: are the same patterns shrinking, or are they just changing shape?

Week 4: Confirm The Plan

Take another full timed practice test or the closest official-style alternative available to you. Review it carefully. Keep polishing the two or three habits that make the biggest difference, rather than trying to relearn every Math topic at once.

Know Whether A 100-Point Goal Fits Your Next Step

A big target can be motivating, but it should lead to a useful decision. After two or three weeks of focused practice, ask:

  • Are my repeated errors becoming less frequent?
  • Can I explain why I miss a question and how I will handle it next time?
  • Am I finishing more questions with a deliberate timing plan?
  • Are my timed-practice results moving in the direction I want?
  • Do I have enough time before my test date to keep building on this work?

If the answer is mostly yes, continue the cycle. If not, shrink the goal for the next session: master one skill, fix one timing habit, or improve one section of a practice set. Small, visible improvements are how a larger score change becomes realistic.

Your next move is straightforward: take a timed Math set, make an error log from every missed or uncertain question, and choose the two patterns you will attack this week. A higher score starts when your review becomes specific enough to change what you do on the next problem.
